Music by The Piano Brothers

Ernestine Horton Press, 94, passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2019, after a brief stay in Baltimore/Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, Md.  She was the beloved widow of the late Joseph Phillip Press, and the mother of two sons, Dwane D. Press and Gary H. Press.  Ernestine and Joseph Press shared 55 years of dedicated marriage, before he preceded her in death, ironically, on February 16, 2006.

Born in Pittsboro, North Carolina, she was the first surviving child and daughter of John Horton Sr. and Sarah ("Sadie") Perry Horton.  She attended elementary and secondary schools in the Pittsboro area, and later graduated from Elizabeth City State College (later, University) with an academic concentration in early childhood education. After getting married in 1951, and accompanying her military officer husband in several international military deployments in Europe, she later returned to the U.S. and briefly settled in Chicago, Illinois, before subsequently migrating to Baltimore, Maryland where she had an outstanding and storied career as an award-winning and dedicated elementary school teacher, mostly in the NE Baltimore Northwood/Govans neighborhood.

She was an active member of many social organizations "The Big Sisters of Baltimore", "Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority", "The Meridians", "The Alpha Wives", "The Alter Guild" of Bethel AME Church, et al.  She enjoyed many social activities including attending many dances with her late husband, entertaining friends and guests in her home, and playing card games including Bridge Club functions and regular monthly poker parties.  She enjoyed all types of sports and was an active fan of the local teams.

Many of her friends and club members will fondly remember her for her kind nature, fierce loyalty, sharp mind, nurturing spirit, and her love of The Lord.  She will also be fondly remembered by the countless number of students and colleagues that she touched and mentored, and for the significant contributions that she made to her community in over 60 years of residency.
